Vintage Watches

Before you decided to go thrift shopping to purchase a snazzy vintage watch it all started with the pocket watch. Commonly warn with a gold chain to be secured onto a waistcoat or belt loop. This was popular in the 16th century until wrist watches became a thing after the first world war formally known to the military as trench watches. In the 1830’s the first American pocket watches with machine made parts was created by Henry Pitkin and his brother.

To help out my modern day hipsters attached to your apple phones you may have heard the joke “ what time is it? its time for you to get a watch”. The watch you maybe still familiar with, was involved in the 17th century from spring powered clocks. Most vintage watches normally are powered by the roman time numerals. Based on design some don’t even have both, so your going to probably have to use your kindergarten teachers method of ( 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30), just kidding…kind of. Its rare you see a dated vintage watch without a leather band.

Now you understand why grandma and grandpa ( nona, nono or oma ,opa what ever you may prefer) have become such a hoarder over the years. Classic pieces like that are timeless and can make an outfit. To your personal taste for your luck there are so many different styles of vintage watches and shapes that can fit a wrist like a glove. I think this would be the time to give your old folks a call and see what they have kept. Keep the accessories light on the eyes, you want the watch to stand out to make a conversation piece. If you’re a dude like Steven Tyler and need more than just that, add jewelry that match the color of the band….but I am talking keep it real minimal.

Due to vintage watches being at a high demand the price rage can defiantly vary. Brands like Omega start at $2,000 to $3,000 ( CAN). At the start of my article I did however say you can thrift shop these, if your looking in all the right places. May sound odd but thrift stores that donate proceeds to churches have a good selection of those. I found one myself that someone engraved on the back stating the year of purchase with the words “ te amo” which in translation means I love you in Spanish. Me being really dumb, I am certain I either lost it or it is buried in one of my unpacked suitcase full of knick-knacks.

If you would like to take a look at watch brands to suit your flavor, I will give you a site that lists practically all of them www.sometimeago.com/watch-brand-list/ . Remember boys, Hat tips & pipes out……and not those ones either.
