Call and Response is the apotheosis of an emporium filled with threads that grow on you like a grape-vine and just enough sunlight which obliges each embellishment to wink.
Entering the throwback oasis, you are greeted by owners Lori Marcuz and Cathy Robinson sewing away on their machines steps away from the creations. Naturally, there is no structure to their madness, especially with the absence of a mood board. Lori and Cathy take great solace in finding inspiration from the runway inside their minds, spilling out like coffee. By this, they have attracted legendary names such as Prince, who they say changed the whole game for them. “You know the black jacket he wore to the Grammy’s? He only gave us four days to come up with outfits,” Cathy stated. “At a point, he allowed us to make whatever we wanted and practically bought as much as we could make him. Through this connection, we dressed individuals like 3rdEyeGirl almost exclusively, Judith Hill, and Zooey Deschanel. It spun out a lot of extra partnerships.”
Despite the full household of recognizable initials signed on the receipt, it still isn’t the only factor that makes Call and Response standout. Lori and Cathy use fine-tuned techniques such as an old school kick press to put studs in fabric one at a time and dye their own materials such as silk and linen when the right textiles don’t necessarily come along. To them, it’s a lot of sweat but it creates magic.
With a huge responsibility on their shoulders to make their clientele feel the most comfortable, you may think it would cause Lori and Cathy to butt heads with their wildest ideas, however, this would be far from the truth. “We do different things. I mean, we will ask each other advice but the only person that guides it is the person who is making it,” a confidently spoken Cathy. “We will know the pieces that we don’t like, it almost screams at you from the rack.” In their words, they create clothes and stuff, oh how 60s!
For destiny’s sake, Call and Response would like to remain in Toronto to serve as they are. Though undoubtedly it is fucking expensive; It still makes sense for the marque moving forward and they might have a swing again at an online shop so their threads can do a little online dating.
