DESIGN FORWARD 2017 – CANADA’S SUSTAINABLE FASHION AWARDS
Where do the most sustainably fashionable Canadians roam you ask? Nothing can make our hearts spin in a recycled sign more than Design Forward – Canada’s Sustainable Fashion Awards. Sustainability and “ Eco” Fashion has no gender limits. Though not many designers or curators specialize in “gent” garments, the courtesy movement would be to push the boundary and create a meeting railroad track. Though, we cannot stray to tell a lie as there were some dapper lads in attendance.
The night started out with a networking opportunity, with fine tasting drinks. Pure + Simple, had a very mellow booth featuring a wide variety of skin care products. It was at moments like these where you just want to sit back and put on a mask ( in a very manly way of course). The rush to get everyone in the runway room was non-existent, which we loved. It gave the chance for people to check out the silent auction ( which we scored some rad Blue Jays Tickets, holla) and mingle with the fellow sustainable community. One of the coolest “appetizers” of the night before the show was the Green Carpet. With every 1lb of clothing donated, H&M donates $1 to Fashion Takes Action. We were extremely thrilled to be a part of that and a good reason/chance to clear out the cave.
While we all scurried to our seats, we were welcomed with the Vanguard Award Presentation and some insanely enlightening information from Cat Criger. Annie Thompson took the well-deserved award home, leading Canada’s sustainable community for over 30 years. The 10 semi-finalists took the stage with pieces that were crazy inventive. Eco fashion and sustainability can never be mocked, that is the best part of attending runway shows/awards based around slow fashion.
Overall, the night exceeded our expectations. Thank you to Fashion Takes Action for having us at Design Forward and the chance to reuse our experience for all of our readers!
